The DCLA New Librarians Interest Group will join with the DC/SLA Young Professionals Group for a casual discussion at Cantina Marina in the Southwest/Waterfront neighborhood.

The New Librarians Interest Group is an effort to bring together DCLA members early in their careers and encourage them to share their experiences, learn from one another, and work together to put their own spin on the profession of librarianship.

Information Professionals as Intelligence Analysts: Making the Transition

A Colloquium with Dr. Edna Reid
Intelligence Analyst, Federal Bureau of Investigation

About the Speaker: Dr. Edna Reid’s distinguished career uniquely qualifies her to span the disciplines of Library Science and Intelligence Analysis. Currently an
intelligence analyst at the FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC, she was formerly Associate Professor of Library Science at Clarion University, PA. She has also served as research scientist and project manager in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and as Associate Professor with Nanyang Business School, NTU, Singapore. Prior to coming to Asia, Dr. Reid was at the SCLIS, Rutgers University, and as a postdoctoral researcher at the UC Berkeley, she conducted research in terrorism information services.

Her areas of specialization are competitive intelligence, web mining, and terrorism informatics. Her research focuses on web mining of extremist groups' digital artifacts (e.g., web sites, forums, multimedia). She was a founding member and served as President of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals. She has published in a number of journals, conference proceedings, and edited collections. One of her articles is entitled Information Professionals as Intelligence Analysts: Making the Transition. (See http://tinyurl.com/y8bekps)

She holds a Doctorate in Library Science from the University of Southern California, a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor’s in elementary education from the D.C.Teachers College (now incorporated into the University of the District of Columbia).

Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) 2010 (26 Sep 2010)

For those librarians and deaf library friends wishing to make plans soon to observe the last week of September as Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) or related name in local communities

Background information: Deaf Awareness Week was originated in 1975 by the National Association of the Deaf www.nad.org. Today the purpose of the week is to promote culture, heritage and language unique to deaf Americans (source: Chase's Annual Calendar)

NAD is an organizational member of the World Federation of the Deaf www.wfdeaf.org which initiated the International Week of the Deaf (IWD) in 1958 with a purpose to "strengthen solidarity among deaf people and to call attention to concerns important to deaf people."

There are many ways to observe the week in 2010. The nation's public libraries will be displaying books, videos and other library materials in their lobby with a focus on American Sign Language and its history during the week.

Many NAD affiliates also have worthy resources to share with local libraries for observing the week.

"Books on Fire" - Banned Books Week Event (28 Sep 2010)

DCLA and the Friends of American University Library have teamed up to present a thought-provoking program for Banned Books Week.

The program will include a screening of the classic film "Books on Fire" followed by a discussion led by George Arnold.

Parking on campus and in the campus lots is free after 5 PM. http://www.american.edu/finance/transportation/lotinfo.cfm There is a shuttle from the Tenleytown/AU metro on the red line. Exit Wisconsin Ave. East, shuttle stops next to the bus shelter.

About the Discussion Leader:
For many years, Reference Librarian George Arnold taught "Censorship & the Media" in AU's School of Communication. He says "Books on Fire" always made his students think.

Deciding whether to purchase a miniature score or lead sheet?...looking for resources to answer a question on Haydn or hip hop?...solving a compact disc cataloging conundrum?

The Atlantic Chapter of the Music Library Association (ATMLA) and American University invite you to join us for workshops on music reference, sound recording cataloging and music collection development.

The workshops are a pre-conference to ATMLA’s chapter meeting and part of the Music Library Association's Educational Outreach Program. The program provides workshops on the basics of music librarianship to individuals working in or considering a career in libraries.

The workshops will be offered concurrently, and led by practicing music librarians. Pre-conference participants are invited to attend a luncheon and the ATMLA chapter meeting immediately following the pre-conference. The cost is included in the $20 registration fee ($15 early registration available).

The event is a conference for scholars, students and filmmakers, a competition for talented deaf and hard of hearing film and video artists, AND a great opportunity for film lovers everywhere to view many outstanding film and video creations by and about the international Deaf Community.
